Beginner’s guide

Token networks and network fees

The same token can exist on multiple different networks, such as ERC-20 (Ethereum), TRC-20 (Tron), and BEP-20 (BNB Chain). Each network is its own route, with its own fee and speed. That’s why, when sending or receiving crypto, choosing the right network is what ensures the funds arrive.

Concept

Token network in one sentence

A network is the blockchain where the token circulates. Think of the network as the road and the token as the vehicle: the same token can travel on different roads.

Each road has its own rules, speed, and toll. That’s why the same token, like USDT, can have a version for each network.

What are ERC-20, TRC-20, and BEP-20?

They are token standards that work on different networks.

ERC-20

The token standard on the Ethereum network. It’s one of the best known and most used in the market.

TRC-20

The standard on the Tron network. It’s often widely used for stablecoin transfers.

BEP-20

The standard on the BNB Chain. Another popular network for moving tokens day to day.

Same token, different networks

Understanding this difference avoids the most common mistake made by people transferring crypto.

NetworkIt’s the route, or blockchain, that the token travels on.
FeeEach network charges its own cost to process the transfer.
SameThe sending and receiving networks must be the same.
Cost

What is the network fee?

It’s the cost of the network itself. The blockchain charges to process the transaction. This charge is also called gas.

It doesn’t go to the exchange. It’s the network that charges, not the platform. That’s why this cost exists everywhere.

Varies from network to network. The same transfer can cost more on one network and less on another.

Changes with activity. When the network is congested, the fee tends to go up.

How to choose the right network?

The golden rule: the network has to be the same on both sides.

Check the destination

See which network the receiving wallet supports. It determines the choice.

Use the same one when sending

Select exactly the same network when sending. A different network can cause the loss of funds.

Test with a small amount

If you’re unsure, first send a small amount to confirm it arrived correctly.
