Beginner's guide

What is blockchain

Blockchain is a kind of digital ledger, public and shared, where all transactions of a cryptocurrency are recorded. Information enters in blocks linked in a chain and, once recorded, cannot be deleted or changed.

Concept

Blockchain in one sentence

Blockchain is the technology that stores the history of who sent what, without relying on a bank or a company in the middle.

It is a distributed ledger: thousands of computers around the world have the same copy and check one another. Since each block links to the previous one via a code, changing old information would break the entire chain. That’s why the history is practically impossible to tamper with.

How does blockchain work?

Three ideas explain almost everything.

Blocks

Transactions are grouped into blocks. Each block is closed and gets a unique code, like a fingerprint.

Chain

Each block carries the code of the previous block, forming a chain. Changing an old block would break all the following ones.

Distributed network

Thousands of computers store the same copy and validate each new block. There is no central server to attack.

Why is blockchain trustworthy?

The ledger is public, distributed, and cannot be rewritten. Transparency and security on the same foundation.

ThousandsWith copies of the ledger spread around the world, all checking one another.
24/7Continuous record, without relying on a bank or business hours.
ImmutableOnce confirmed, the transaction is not deleted or changed.
Use cases

What is blockchain used for?

Record crypto transactions. Without needing a bank in the middle.

Prove who has what. In a public and transparent way, for anyone to verify.

Track origin and history. Of an asset, without relying on an intermediary’s word.

Serve as a foundation for apps. Such as smart contracts and digital finance.

Where is blockchain used?

It was born with Bitcoin, but it went far beyond it.

Cryptocurrencies

It is the foundation of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies: it records each transaction publicly and permanently.

Smart contracts

On networks like Ethereum, programs run automatically when conditions are met, without intermediaries.

Records and traceability

Supply chains, documents, and certificates use blockchain to prove origin and prevent fraud.
